Do You Know How To Troubleshoot Your Furnace?

Blog

Winter weather is right around the corner, which means many homeowners will soon start relying on their furnaces to produce heat.

The last thing you want is for your furnace to fail during the dead of winter. It's important for homeowners to be able to troubleshoot basic furnace problems so they will know when to call in a technician for repairs.

Here are three simple troubleshooting tips that can help you better care for your furnace over time.

1. Replace Dirty Air Filters

A dirty air filter can cause many problems for your furnace. Before you reach out for professional help when your furnace isn't producing as much heat as it should, take the time to check the air filter.

If you hold the filter up to a light source and cannot see any light coming through, it's time to replace the old filter with a new one. A fresh filter will allow air to easily pass into your furnace to be heated and distributed throughout your home.

If you still feel like your furnace isn't generating enough heat after you have replaced the air filter, contact an HVAC technician to investigate why your furnace isn't working properly.

2. Check Your Thermostat

One of the easiest ways to troubleshoot problems with your furnace is to check your thermostat. The thermostat acts as the brain of your heating system. When indoor temperatures fall below your pre-set minimum, the thermostat signals your furnace to begin producing heat.

It's possible that the thermostat could get bumped and the heat setting changed. The batteries powering your thermostat can die. Dust and other fine particles can interfere with the electrical connections inside your thermostat. Each of these issues can result in your furnace not producing enough heat.

Try troubleshooting your thermostat first, then contact a repair technician if the thermostat isn't causing your furnace problems.

3. Check the Power Source

Most modern furnaces have their own dedicated electrical circuit within your home's electrical system. A sudden power surge or a malfunction within your furnace can trip the circuit breaker attached to the furnace.

If your furnace will not turn on, try troubleshooting the problem by checking the power source first. Reset the breaker switch and look for signs of damage or discoloration.

If your furnace continues to trip the breaker or does not fire up after the circuit is reset, you will need the help of a technician to repair the problem.
