What To Do If Your Heating System Isn't Working Properly

Blog

Do you have central heating that stopped working all of a sudden? Is there no longer air flowing out of your registers? Or, is the air coming out of registers just not as hot as it should be? Obviously, there are many different things that could break on a central heating system because it is made up of many complicated and connected components.

A small problem with one element in the furnace can lead to other issues. So, it can be very difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of your problem. But, if you are able to better identify the symptoms of your system, there is always a chance that you will be able to fix it yourself, or that you will at least be able to accurately tell an HVAC professional what is going on so they can give you a more accurate estimate and fix your problem more efficiently.

No Air At All?

If there is no air coming out of the registers, you first want to make sure that they are actually open. Even though this might sound like a stupid mistake, many people do make it and end up calling in help without ever double checking.

If you still have no air coming out of the registers when they're open, you should turn off your thermostat immediately. The problem might be that your furnace simply isn't receiving any power. If you're lucky, you will simply need to flip the breaker switch and your furnace will power right up, and you'll be able to start using your heat like normal. But, if you can't figure out the power issue, you should call a professional. If any of the electric lines are somehow became disconnected or loose, it could be dangerous to handle them if you aren't an HVAC technician.

Less Hot Air?

If the air coming out of your register simply isn't hot enough, there is probably an issue with something inside your furnace. Internal furnace issues should never be touched, except by licensed contractors. Since the issues could also have to do with the gas and electricity connections inside your furnace, you should be very prudent about getting it looked at. Luckily, most of these repairs are not overly complicated or expensive. While it my cost a couple hundred dollars to repair or replace a small part of your furnace, you will be able to have your system up and running once again.
