A Guide To Common HVAC Repairs

Blog

One of the most frustrating things about HVAC systems is that the maintenance is relentless. That is, you need to constantly do your part to clean, service, and maintain your system to ensure it is running at maximum efficiency. This includes DIY maintenance and cleaning, as well as having your furnace, condenser, and evaporator units professionally serviced on a regular basis. This article will explain a couple of common HVAC maintenance jobs that you will need to invest in over the years. It will show you which jobs should be professionally handled, and which you can do yourself.

Furnace Repairs

When it comes to furnace maintenance, most of the big jobs should be professionally handled. For instance, working within furnaces is always a little dangerous since you are tinkering with gas and electrical systems. That being said, changing the filter is one simple job you can do yourself. It doesn't interfere with any of the electrical or gas lines, and you can even do it when the furnace is turned on. But, don't do it while the flame is lit and the blower is pumping air. If you are having a problem with your furnace that you cannot identify, leave it to the pros. If it sounds like the blower is not working, leave it to the pros. If you air isn't coming out hot, call in the pros. Basically, don't do anything besides change your filter when necessary.

AC Repairs

Maintaining the AC system is also something that usually needs to be handled by professionals. You probably don't want to tinker with the fan, motor, or other electrical components on a condenser unit. These are complicated and need to be professionally calibrated. However, you can clean outside of your condenser and the coils on your own. This is a very important maintenance task that most people completely overlook. It is also very easy and cheap to perform. All you need to do to clean the coils is to spray down the outside of your condenser wherever you see dirt buildup on the aluminum sheets. Cleaning out this dirt will improve the functionality of your condenser.

Unless you are an electrician, you should probably leave thermostat repair to the pros. If your AC furnace is not powering on, even when you turn on your thermostat, there's probably something wrong with the wiring. You don't want to mess with this unless you are an HVAC technician. Basically, most big jobs need to be handed off to licensed pros. But, do the easy jobs on your own to save time and money.
